I am very interested in learning a second language. Unfortunately, I find it hard to stick with just one, and start lots of different ones and don’t stick with it. Currently my list that I go back to most often is Spanish, Japanese, Maltese and Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
I currently use Duolingo for Spanish and Japanese, but was getting very confused by Japanese. I’m ok with hiragana and katakana (where symbols = sounds), but find kanji much harder (where symbols = words, often multiple, and can have different pronunciations). I gave up on Japanese for a little bit, but then found a new app that I thought I would test out.
It is called Lingo Legends, and is available from the Apple and Android App stores. You learn a language while playing a card-based adventure game (similar to Pokemon cards). If you answer the language question correctly, you do the action on the card (e.g. do damage, increase defence). You journey through the story, battling monsters, building new weapons, unlocking new cards with different abilities and earning experience to help you level up and make your attacks stronger.
In the free version of the app, you have 20 energy each day to expend on battling monsters, this usual lets you battle four monsters. If you wish to battle more, you need to watch an ad to replenish your energy. However, I find this is not an issue, as it is only one ad at a time, and you get quite a bit of gameplay before needing to watch ads (compared to Duolingo which is currently making me watch an ad after every lesson I complete!).
There is also a premium version, where you earn more coin, different equipment, etc, but for now I don’t think that is necessary. The coin is used to buy more cards so you can create a stronger collection of attacks, but I have no issues using the cards I have, and the equipment appears to only be for aesthetics, and doesn’t affect your battling abilities. You also earn coin in the free version by training and defeating monsters.
As a result of Lingo Legends, I am understanding Japanese sentence structure a lot better than I was with Duolingo. I am still getting very confused by kanji, but I can play for longer before having to stop (unlike the 5 hearts with the free version of Duolingo). In Lingo Legends, you keep battling and learning on your quest until you run out of health. I haven’t completely run out on a quest yet so I am not sure what happens at that point, but if you complete a quest, your health automatically refills to full health for the next quest.
If you want to learn a language and play a game at the same time, I highly recommend Lingo Legends. If you download the game, enter the code PXCRA in the referral rewards screen and we will both earn free outfits for the game (again only for aesthetic purposes).
Ps. If you press the heart at the bottom of this post, it will help other people to find my writing 😊
